“The Darkest Minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces.”

Summary: When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.
My Thoughts: I really loved this book.
A couple weeks ago I was watching Christine on Youtube (PolandBananasBOOKS) and she was doing a booktalk on this book. She gave a synopsis and I immediately knew I wanted to read it.
The atmosphere at the beginning really set the book up nicely. Right from the start I could tell it was going to be an interesting world that we are thrown into. The whole idea of a concentration camp where kids are forced to go to gives me chills down my spine.
The main character Ruby is one of those kids at the camp. The book goes through various stages of her life and introduces the world in that way. I like Ruby because she's not like all the rest of the YA dystopian main characters. She isn't too stubborn and has a good mindset. Ruby's character development blew me away. She starts off not being able to stick up for herself, and by the end of the book she's the strongest character.
The other character in the book were amazing, too. I loved Zu, Chubs, and, of course, Liam. I really enjoyed Ruby and Liam's chemistry. They're relationship also developed immensely and I loved every second of it.
Cliffhangers always make me mad. But this one was by far the most frustrating in the best way possible. Now I simply cannot WAIT until the second book comes out!
I totally recommend this for those of you who liked Divergent or The Hunger Games. It's a great read and well worth your time. :) Happy reading!
